Jupiter: It is the largest planet in the solar system. The diameter of Jupiter at its equator is about 88,700 miles (142,700 kilometers), more than 11 times the diameter of the earth. Ancient astronomers named jupiter after the King of Roman Gods

Orbit: Jupiter takes about 4,333 earth days, or almost 12 earth years, to orbit around the sun, compared with 365 days or 1 year for the earth.

Temperature: Astronomers believe that Jupiter is a fluid planet. It consist primarily of gas, but is composed of some liquid as well. The planet may have a small solid core of rock material. So the temperature at the top of Jupiter's clouds averages about -236*F (-149*C). The temperature in the atmosphere beneath the cloud is much higher. It reaches about 34,000*F (19000*C) at 8,080 miles (13,000 kilometers) from the planets centre. Scientist have not yet determined Jupiter's surface temperature. But they know that its interior is very hot. The planet gives off twice as much energy as it receives from the sun because of its intense internal heat. The central core maybe about 43,000*F (24,000*C).

Mass & Density: Jupiter has a greater mass ( a body of matter with no definate shape) than any other planet. It is 318 times as massive as earth. The force of gravity on Jupiter is much greater than that on earth. A 100- pound (45 kilograms) object on earth would weigh about 264 pound (120 kilograms) on Jupiter. Although Jupiter has large mass, it has a low density (mass per unit volum
e). It is slightly denser than water, and about a fourth as dense as the earth.

Radio radiation: Unlike the other plantes , Jupiter sends out rather strong radio radiation. The radiation is received on the earth in two forms - as bursts of radio energy and as continuous radio energy. It can be received on the earth by radio telescopes.

Stallites & rings: Jupiter has 16 known satellites. Four largest moons of
Jupiter are called Galilean satellites becuse the Italian astronomer Galileo discovered them in 1610. They have diameters greater than 1,900 miles (3,060 kilometers) Two of the moons, Callisto and Ganymede, appear to be made up of equal proportions of rocky material and ice. Other two, Europa and Lo , are made of rocky matter with little or no ice. Lo has active volcanoes. Rest 12 smaller satellites have diameters rangind from about 9 to 106 miles (15 to 170 kilometers). Jupiter also has a thin ring around it. The ring appers to consist mostly of fine dust particles and is much fainter than the bright rings of Saturn. It is estimated to be about 18 miles (29 kilometers) thick and more than 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) wide.

Jupiter the God: Ju
piter was King of gods and ruler of the Universe in Roman mythology. He is also called Jove. Jupiter had the same powers as the Greek god Zues. Jupiter was the son of Saturn, the ruler of the Universe. Jupiter took Saturn's place. Jupiter's brothers were the gods Neptune and Pluto. His sisters were the Goddesses Ceres, Juno, and Vesta. Jupiter married Juno, who became quenn of gods.
